Task 4 - EDIT 6100 Course Exam

Fall Semester 2002
(20 POINTS)

The purpose of this course exam is to enable you to reflect on the future of instructional technology as a field and your own plans to join, ignore, or combat this field. Please feel free to include graphics, audio files, digital movies, and other media in your “document,” but don’t feel compelled to go beyond text if that allows you to express yourself fully.

Question I - The Future of Instructional Technology (8 points)

Futurists used to look out fifty years or more. For example, the 1939 New York World’s Fair included exhibits about what our lives would be like in the year 2000 But today, technology is changing so fast that it may be better to look out only 10 years from now. (After all, in 1990, how many people predicted the impact of the WWW in the year 2000?) What I would like you to do is predict the future of Instructional/Educational Technology in the Year 2012. There are several ways of addressing this question, including coming up with your own unique format.

Optional Format 1: Prepare a syllabus for an “Introduction to Instructional (or Educational) Technology” course in the year 2012. What would be the topics or content in such a course? What would be the course objectives? What tasks would students be assigned? What pedagogy would be used in the course? How would learning be assessed? What would be the role of technology in the course? How would the course be implemented? There are many examples of course syllabi available on the WWW (and as a graduate student, you probably have a few favorites in your collection from previous courses at either the graduate or undergraduate level). Your syllabus should not be longer than 4 pages of text plus any other media content you wish to include.

Optional Format 2: Re-read Dr. Lloyd Rieber’s online essay “The Proper Way to Become an Instructional Technologist”. Write your own essay concerning the proper way to be an Instructional (or Educational) Technologist in the year 2012. Your essay should not be longer than 4 pages of text plus any other media content you wish to include.

Optional Format 3: Prepare a brief article for a practitioner-oriented publication in your field of expertise (e.g., middle school education, adult education, or business training) about the future of Instructional Technology in that field in the year 2012. Your article should not be longer than 7 pages of text plus any other media content you wish to include.

Optional Format 3 Chosen

Wrote a Trade Journal Article for the computer industry that is geared towards business executives and discussing the field of Education and Instructional Technology as a largely untapped market.

Question II - Your Future with Instructional Technology (8 points)

Your response to this question should have two parts.

Part 1: Write an advertisement for the ideal job you would like to find once you have completed the degree program in which you are currently enrolled, e.g., adult education or instructional technology. You can find examples of job descriptions on the WWW, or in periodicals. A typical advertisement will have fewer than 200 words. Here is an example from the Chronicle of Higher Education

Multimedia Production: Senior Multimedia Producer WVIZ/PBS in Cleveland, Ohio is looking for a quality person to fill this key position in content creation and management. Plan, develop and execute multimedia materials. Create project plans, design documents, schedules, technical specification and project budgets. Supervise multimedia staff and contractors. If you have intelligence and wit, and the skills and experience to create excellence, along with the desire to make a difference, then we'd like to hear from you right away. WVIZ/PBS is committed to excellence in public service and educational media. Join a vital, engaged and fun organization in a top 15 market. Cleveland is a diverse community with exceptional arts, education, culture and quality of life. 3 years' quality design experience with strong record of project management. Knowledge of Web and CD-ROM development tools. Instructional design background a plus. Send resume with cover letter (including salary history) to: Dan Novinc, HR Director, WVIZ/PBS, 4300 Brookpark Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44134; E-mail to: dnovinc@wviz.org; Fax to 216-749-2560. No phone calls please. Only applicants deemed qualified will be contacted.

Part 2: Describe a typical day in your life a few years after you have your new ideal job. This should be no longer than 2-3 pages of text plus any other media content you wish to include. Although you may not be an instructional technologist per se, try to describe how you might be applying the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of an instructional technologist in whatever your chosen field happens to be. You can write this in the third person (Although Joan has a home office, she finds it useful to meet with many of her clients in the Delta Crown Room at the Atlanta Airport.) or the first person (When I arrived at the university that day, I was not surprised to find that campus web connection was down yet again.) Please have fun with this and be as creative as you wish with this response as long as you are also making a serious effort to reflect on your possible future.

Future Job

Ideal job would combine aspects of CTO/CIO and Research Scientist, and Professorship.

Question III - What is Instructional Technology? (4 points)

Revisit your response to the question “What is Instructional Technology?” that you tackled in Task 1. Has your definition of IT changed over the semester? In what ways? What has influenced your thinking (specific examples from readings and class)? How would you reword it?

If your definition hasn’t changed since the beginning of the semester, what have we discussed/explored that has substantiated your original definition? Give specific examples from readings and class.

This should be no longer than 2 pages of text plus any other media content you wish to include.
